ACE (Environmental Conflicts Archives)

ACE is an oral history project which aims to collect stories from all the actors involved in the environmental struggles in contemporary Italy.

It is a rather ambitious project for the forces that we have right now; as a matter of fact, until now we have worked only on the Campania case. However, in principle we do not want to limit this project to that case; we believe that a new season of struggles and mobilizations is going on in Italy. People are fighting against the High Speed Train (TAV) in the Susa Valley, against the Messina Bridge which should collect continental Italy to Sicily, against incinerators and landfills everywhere and we could list many other examples.

How could we preserve the history of those struggles? Many times they do not have a judicial output and generally they do not have a strong involvement of the mainstream environmentalist organizations. In other words, the written sources about those struggles are very poor. If we want to construct the story of this other “environmentalism,” we need to give voice to the very protagonists of it.

For this reason we have started to interview activists, experts, and politicians who have been involved in the Campania case.

By now ACE gathers about 40 interviews, but we are still working. We have interviews with experts, activists (women and men), few politicians.

Please if you want to be part of this project contact us (marco.armiero@gmail.com). You can help ACE donating your own story and/or volunteering collecting interviews and other materials. Below you can find the call for interviews, in which we explain why we want to collect your stories and templates of the interviews itself.
Please, help us!

Plus, if students or other scholars have collected interviews on environmental conflicts in Italy, we would like to propose some kind of synergy. Ideally, we would love to create just one archive where all the interviews are collected, catalogued, and available; however, waiting for the dreams to come true, it would be enough starting with listing here those who possess collections of interviews and are willing to be contacted and, eventually, sharing their materials. Hence, if anybody wants to be included, send us his/her email address and a short description of the kind of material s/he has.
ACE is also looking for other kind of sources such as photographs, videos, written materials, judicial papers, petitions etc. If you have anything like that and want to share, contact us and we will find a way to duplicate it and make them available to everybody.

In ACE will merge also the oral history project realized by Salvatore Paolo De Rosa (see his profile in “about us" and his articles are available at the webpage "sources and links"). Salvatore has collected interviews with activists in Acerra (the city where the incinerator has been built), epidemiological studies, and he is willing to share his network of contacts and connections with the local context with those who might be interested in working on that area.

He is also the author of a M.A. dissertation on Acerra.

Please contact Salvatore at s.derosa@napolimonitor.it
