How can we solve the problem?

yesterday I was at the Casa Italiana in Barcelona. They invited me to talk about environmental justuce. There were about 200 people, mostly students from the local Italian High School (yes there is an Italian High School in Barcelona...)
What really struck me were their repetitive questions about how to solve the problems (garbage, pollution, etc.). My discourse was about justice and inequal distrubution of risks and benefits, but their questions were above all about technical solutions to the environmental problems. After all, I was an expert coming from the university and I was supposed to deliver solutions.
I do not blame them for asking me about solutions. Actually, I have enjoyed a lot the meeting and I am very grateful for their invitation. Nevertheless, I am curios about the connections between expertise and democracy and the strong depoliticization of ecological issues. A question might have been: how to avoid environmental injustice? Or they might have questioned the very notion of environmental injustice. But they stayed within the real of the present: how to find a solution to the problem. The causes of the problems and the effects of technical solutions were out of the table.
Probably that lecture is the best demostration that, after all, our project LARES is badly needed. For once, I was really right.

Hard Work

The garbage crisis in Campania has been discussed several times at the EU Parliament. However, when I wrote to the Italian European Deputies about my research nobody but one answered my email. Maybe, this is a relevant issue

Where can I find the papers of Cassiopea?

I am looking everywhere, but it is impossible. I have even contacted some prosecutors but nothing. How can I find the papers of the Cassiopea's trial?

It is very disappointing when you know there is a gold mine out there and you cannot access it. I will try to write the tribunal where they did the inquiry. Will they even just answer to my email? This is the issue we deal all days in doing our job..

First blog

It is my first blog. I do not have any experience in this field and I am not even sure in which language should I write. But I feel that I should write about this website and this project.

LARES is a project about environmental justice. LARES is an acronym for Landscape of resistance. My idea is that the struggles for environmental justice are shaping new landscape in both material and narrative sense. Those struggles are giving new meanings to places and are building communities where there were only dormitories. I do not believe in a romantic idea that there are communities there which fight against the global capital. I do believe that while the global capital is imposing its political agenda, communities may form exactly n the process of resisting, many times re/inventing shared memories and common past.

I am a historian after all.

I hope with this website is to start something. I know that it is difficult because collaboration is always difficult. Nevertheless, I really hope that this will not be my website, but a common space to work together activists and scholars trying to understand what is happening in the relationships among nature, society, and social inequalities.
